Blocky, modern sans serif fonts have reigned supreme in brand identities for the past decade, but the tide is turning. Serif fonts are seeing a major uptick in popularity, thanks in large part to an unexpected industry. As AI companies reshape the economy and everyday life, they’re choosing fonts that come across as more authoritative, trustworthy, nostalgic, and human. This branding zeitgeist is rapidly spreading to other industries as well.

Charles Nix is a Senior Executive Creative Director, designer, typographer and educator. He was lead designer for Helvetica Now and has designed a number of popular typefaces in the Monotype Library, including Walbaum and Hope Sans, which received a Certificate of Typographic Excellence in the 22nd Annual Type Directors Club Typeface Design Competition.
