Type Faces: Meet Sneha Banerjee.

Welcome to our Type Faces series, where we’ll be sharing the stories of some of the fabulous people behind the type here at Monotype. From all around the globe and across the organization, our Monotype colleagues truly prove that, like Charles Nix, Senior Executive Creative Director at Monotype, always says, “We are ALL creative.”

As a product manager, Sneha Banerjee spends her days fixing problems and fine‑tuning the Monotype website so that visitors can find what they need. With a background in engineering, and a bit of problem-solving magic, she brings clarity to challenges that users may face. Based in Delhi, India, she recently celebrated three years with Monotype. Outside of work, you’ll find her spending time with her 6-year-old daughter in some of Delhi’s best green spaces, like Sundar Nursey and Prerna Sthal, or curled up at home with a book or movie. Read on to learn more about Sneha.

Tell us about your city.
Delhi, India has a wonderful rhythm to its chaos. We have some beautiful weather from time to time. It does get harsh during the winters and the summers, but I like the city and, since it is the capital, it’s culturally and historically rich.

You can explore a lot. If you’re somebody who loves history, you’ll be able to see a lot of monuments; from the Mughals, who had built huge forts, to the British, who had essentially built this part of Delhi called Connaught Place, and Lutyens’ Delhi.

Sir Edwin Lutyens designed the whole thing from ground up, and it has the widest of roads and is very well managed. That part is really wonderful and also has an Old Delhi flavor because certain buildings have been preserved.

Were you raised in Delhi?
I grew up in another metro city in India: Kolkata, West Bengal. I was born there and studied there. I came to Delhi for my higher education from Indraprastha in 2010.

What’s life like for you outside of work?
I’m a homebody to begin with. On an off day, I am generally spending time with family. I have a six-year-old. My time generally goes to being with her, whether we spend it doing homework, playing in a park, or exploring some new experiences.

I love visiting the library nearby with my husband and daughter. As a family of bookworms, that’s one of our favorite places to spend hours together. I also love a good movie!  I recently introduced my daughter to Harry Potter and she was very happy. She loved the first part, but she was a little scared after watching Chamber of Secrets.

What’s something someone would be surprised to learn about you?
I’ve loved swimming since I was little — from kiddie-pools to real pools, and eventually India’s beaches, especially Goa and the coastal stretches of Odisha — that’s where I made my first dolphin spotting!

My first proper snorkeling and scuba experience was in Indonesia, around Nusa Penida near Bali. Manta Bay has been my best spot so far. I still remember the reef manta rays drifting past like slow, underwater kites.

Now and then a pair would loop back around, their wings casting soft shadows. There were flashes of color from a few clownfish darting in and out of their anemone, and once I caught sight of a sea turtle gliding in the distance, completely unbothered by anything around it.

What do you love most about snorkeling?
The beauty itself is stunning, but it’s the silence underwater that stays with you — that deep, steady stillness where everything slows down and your mind finally has room to breathe. I’m hoping to see Australia’s coral reefs someday. It’s firmly on my bucket list.

Are you someone who likes to travel?
There was a time when I had on my to-do list to visit one country every year. I’ve been to the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Belgium, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, and France. And then there is Nepal and the rest of our neighboring countries. Of course, I’ve been all over India as well. My dad made sure we did that growing up, so I’ve been West, North, South — all of it.

When I visited the United Kingdom, I had to choose between Stonehenge and the Making of Harry Potter tour. I just had one day, and I decided to go to Stonehenge. It was also for my daughter, since I have plans to go back and let her have the Harry Potter tour experience when she can remember it. She was five-and-a-half then, and she’d forget.

But 221B Baker Street, I didn’t miss that — I couldn’t miss Sherlock Holmes.

What’s your time been like with Monotype?
I started my journey with Monotype three years ago on the enterprise platform. Last year, I transitioned to the corporate side, and my job essentially is to keep the site running and stable. We build frameworks on the back end to ensure the content team can publish content that excites the user, increases engagement, and essentially leads to client sign-ups.

How are you creative at your job?
What I like best about my job as a product manager is how closely I get to work with the users. I actually get to hear their pain points.

My creativity here is not about fonts, but how I’m able to solve the user pain points: how I can make the site more engaging to them so that when they land on the page they can immediately find what they’re looking for.

What’s a typical day like?
For a product manager, this could actually vary quite a bit. Some days are very hectic, some days are pretty standard.

I start off my day with a morning connect with my squad, my technical team, to talk about what’s happening. We work in sprints for features that we have tied to our roadmap. It essentially breaks down from roadmap to sprints, to stories, to tasks. We are already planning where we want to see the platform in 2027. Somewhere down the line in the middle of the day, I have one hour that I try to keep set aside for my focus work.

What’s a project you’re particularly proud of?
In 2023, localization and globalization was a major company goal. The expansion around Spanish is where I owned the entire platform. I also handled Portuguese up until User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and pushing the site live. I was involved in everything — from coordinating, to the technicalities of it, getting it translated, vetted, and ensuring that multilingual support was implemented consistently across all customer-facing platforms.

The other project that I was very strongly involved in was custom fonts as a service (or SSPAF)Essentially, whenever a big brand reaches out to Monotype for custom fonts, it was a very email-driven process. Somewhere down the line, the studio team would be involved, and then the iterations and delivery of the font would be through an email send-out.

Now, we deliver the fonts in-platform. We don’t want clients to have to go to their email and find a font, while the rest of their inventory resides on a different platform. Why not give them everything together? Just log in and everything resides there.

Do you have a favorite font?
I have been using Helvetica very often, so I love that. I love how it’s very modern, but has this traditional touch to it as well. And it fits well everywhere, be it a presentation, an email, or a document. I love the clarity. I’m all about clarity. I’m not too fancy.

What keeps you creative or energized each day?
My creativity, even when I was a young child, has not necessarily always been around developing something that’s creative. I used to sketch at a point in time. I used to sing, I trained in Indian classical singing for 14 years. That’s all fine. But I always enjoyed solving problems.

Whenever there’s a problem, the quick reaction is often pushing it away or staying in denial. My reaction always is, “How can we solve for it? Is there a workaround? Can I do something about it?” I have landed myself in a wonderful place in a role that allows me to do exactly that.

Earlier, you mentioned watching movies with your family. What kind of movies do you watch together?
I have a lot of favorites when it comes to movies. I love Harry Potter. Around the holidays, I love classic kids movies. Home Alone is a must. How The Grinch Stole Christmas, I love that. I love A Christmas Carol. That’s something of a ritual that we watch.

There’s nothing like watching a really good movie.
Absolutely. It takes away sometimes from the reality of life, which is exactly what one needs. And that is why I love Harry Potter. Just the mere fact that you can make things disappear or you can make things appear. If you can fix broken things, it’s wonderful.

Do you have a favorite place in your city?
I have a thing for open places. There is this really huge natural park which we go to. It has a huge pond and ducks swimming all around, so I like going there.

Apart from that, if the weather is good, it’s not too hard. I don’t need much. I would just need a nice book and a coffee and I’m sorted. My favorite place has to be my home. Honestly, I love that.
