Every typeface has a unique and distinct aroma that emanates when in use — seducing the reader with a thousand complementary stories untold in the text itself.

Pedro Arilla is a Creative Type Director, designer and typographer from Spain. Since 2010, he has been designing, writing, teaching and lecturing about typefaces. He started at Fontsmith in 2017, and joined the Monotype Studio team in 2020. He is interested in how typography plays a storytelling role in the intersection of culture, technology and sociology.

Pedro holds an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading (graduating with distinction); hosts one of the main podcasts and publications on typography in Spanish (Don Serifa); organizes and teaches an international one-week type design workshop (Glíglifo); and is a regular speaker in type and design events.

In his day-to-day work, Pedro builds relationships with agencies and brands; researches type trends and innovative letter flavors; and reflects on how to keep tricking the brain and the eye to solve legibility issues.

His main passions are stories and narratives, and how language can become tactile. Pedro spends most of his spare time writing, reading and bookworming compulsively. However, he does not hesitate to get his nose out of a book when there is a good basketball game to watch or a new destination to explore.
