The Wolpe Collection - Sachsenwald

Set in Sachsenwald™

The Story

Saschenwald is part of The Wolpe Collection of typefaces, and is the first digitization of this innovative blackletter design. The Wolpe Collection celebrates Berthold Wolpe’s outstanding body of work, and includes five iconic typefaces, digitized and updated by Toshi Omagari of the Monotype Studio. Berthold Wolpe first created the Sachsenwald typeface for a German publisher, who abandoned the order during World War II. Wolpe then tried to make his Sachsenwald typeface suitable for use in the general public, with the hope that it would ignite a “passing vogue” for blackletter type. But the early use of blackletter type by Nazi Germany, which was later dismissed in favor of Roman type, kept the Sachsenwald design from achieving wider adoption around the world. When he discovered the Sachsenwald typeface, Toshi Omagari saw the opportunity to revive and preserve a beautiful blackletter design. Toshi adding an alternate X character, and created light and regular weights to accommodate a whole new set of uses.

The Designers

Berthold Wolpe

Berthold Wolpe

Berthold Wolpe helped shape graphic design in post-war Europe. His book jackets, with their intense colour and vivacious typography, were way ahead of their time, and his Albertus® typeface continues to be widely admired and used by designers today.

He escaped Nazi persecution in Germany in 1935, moving to London where he created the Albertus, Sachsenwald™ and Pegasus™ typefaces for Monotype, and in 1941 joined Faber & Faber, where he designed more than 1,500 book covers over the course of three decades.

Wolpe went on to teach at Camberwell School of Art and the Royal College of Art, as well as designing a masthead for The Times in 1966. Warm, animated, scholarly and intensely curious, Wolpe was held in esteem and affection by colleagues and collaborators. He was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 1959, awarded the OBE in 1983 and died in 1989.

Toshi Omagari

Toshi Omagari

Toshi Omagari joined Monotype in 2012, after studying typography at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, and completing an MA in typeface design at the University of Reading. With a keen interest in font development, Omagari has worked on several major type projects for Monotype including resurrecting a ‘lost’ typeface to create Neue Haas Unica™ and updating the hand of WA Dwiggins to create Metro® Nova. He’s also designed a fashion-led branding typeface for H&M, and created a font for Sir Quentin Blake that borrowed on the illustrator’s own idiosyncratic handwriting.
